Dick
Young
Dick was born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, except
during WW II. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic on a NROTC scholarship
and served three years in the Navy, primarily in the Mediterranean. He
attended night classes at Georgetown Law Center (three kids then!),
worked as a patent and trademark attorney, and was a partner in a DC
law firm. His main community activity has been the Northern Virginia
Swim League, serving as its President in 1979-80, and as its Rules
Chairman for the next 25 years.
He and his wife, Willie, will celebrate their 50th
anniversary in August with their four children and six grandchildren.
Their joint interests include their genealogical and present family;
organizing and attending reunions with friends, family and classmates;
their summer cottage and community in Northfield, Massachusetts; PBS;
travel; and theater, especially Sondheim musicals. Dick became
acquainted with GMU in the '70s and early '80s when Willie was on the
Board of the GMU Foundation.
Dick didn’t learn about OLLI until 2007. He is still
amazed by the diversity of its courses and the quality of its teachers.
He has taught classes on The Galapagos, California history, a trip into
Alaska's bear country, his great-grandfather's Civil War diary, and his
great-grandfather's voyage to the California gold rush. He was a Class
Liaison and he attends meetings of the History and Current Events
Resource Group, the History Club, and the Communications Committee.
